FILM REVIEW: PROWL – MS. PRIMATE
Review By Kerrie Whalan
Director: Patrik Syversen
Cast: Ruta Gedmintas, Joshua Bowman and Perdita Weeks
Synopsis: Amber dreams of escaping her small town existence and persuades her friends to accompany her to find an apartment in the big city. When their transportation breaks down, she and her friends gratefully accept a ride in the back of a semi. But when the driver refuses to stop and they discover the cargo is hundreds of cartons of blood, they panic. Their panic turns to terror when the truck disgorges them into a dark, abandoned warehouse where blood-thirsty creatures learn to hunt human prey, which, the friends realize, is what they now are
Review: Once again After Dark Originals have worked the ‘original’ into this film. The horror genre is one where it has almost always been done before, I can most certainly say that in this film I was blindsided by the twist that unfolded. To give you a slight idea what this movie is like, think 30 DAYS OF NIGHT meets WOLF CREEK. If you are after a horror flick with lots of blood splashing about then this is the movie for you.
Two points of note when speaking from a more technical point of view this is a film that starts up slowly with act one a bit of a let down, luckily for us this builds in the second act and ending on a bit of a high in the third (with the perfect set up for PROWL 2). The other is that this film was extremely well shot and that alone makes it an excellent watch. While some of the script was a little lacking you got quite a lot from some clever directorial work.
Courtney Hope (Amber) was very well cast as the slightly atypical heroine. She was also supported well by the rest of the cast, but essentially this is a film that is all about Amber. As often the case (especially with a young cast) the relationships between the different characters were not believable (especially the romantic links). Perdita Weeks (Fiona), Joshua Bowman (Peter) and Jamie Blackley (Ray) all are only used sparingly with Ruta Gedmintas (Suzy) being the only other character that features slightly more often in the film. This is also the only down side as Gedmintas appears to be the weakest of all the actors used often leaving you wondering why here character was even present.
This film, if it was slightly longer, and with just a bit more work on the script really could have been five stars, but in keeping with what appears to be the After Dark Originals format, at just 81mins and with a slightly lengthy start it did not bring to much to the story.
