FILM REVIEW: SECONDS APART – MS. PRIMATE
Director: Antonio Negret
Cast: Orlando Jones, Edmund Entin, Gary Entin, Samantha Droke
Synopsis: Seth and Jonah are twins with a dangerous ability: telepathy. Things start to spiral out of their control as their classmates end up dying in twisted and bizarre ways. The police suspect them. But, jealousy begins to divide them and soon they can no longer trust each other. Leading up to a horrific battle against themselves.
Review: This movie really shows that from time to time ideas can be redeveloped into something uniquely different. The idea of a ‘link’ between twins is by no means a new one, especially in the horror/ thriller genre, neither is the presence of strange psychic powers (think CARRIE and her telekinesis) however SECONDS APART is a movie that takes a distinctly different angle on both of these themes.
One of the most notable aspects of this movie is that the lead roles are played by actual twins rather than one actor playing two roles. Edmund and Gary Entin performed their roles of ‘Jonah’ and ‘Seth’ extremely well, seeing these two together allowed you to feel the angst and pressure that these two were experiencing. The twins also have the perfect amount of creepy presence that makes them even more convincing.
The same cannot be said for the supporting actors, Orlando Jones is dull and uninteresting as ‘Detective Lampkin’, throughout the movie you are given snippets of his characters back story but not the entire history so you are left a little wanting with this. The other character that really failed to show any real ‘spark’ was our main female supporting actor Samantha Droke who plays ‘Eve’, while her presence is the real reason we have some story she is slightly annoying in her victim persona.
This is one of the few movies that I have seen where the third act is the weakest. The first two and fantastic have several scenes that will have you on the edge of your seat, in the third act on several occasions I actually found myself a little confused about several different aspects of the storyline.
This movie does have quite a few scenes that make you jump and hold your breath as it progresses and it is a interesting take on telekinesis and twins, it’s great to sit down to something that is original in the AFTER DARK ORIGINALS series.
