GAME: PLAYSTATION MOVE HEROES
Review By Anthony O’Sullivan
Developer: Nihilistic
Platform: PS3 exclusive (Move controller only)
Review:Playstation Move Heroes had all the hallmarks of a classic platform cross over title when I first heard of its development. Bringing together six of the most loved characters from some of the biggest Playstation franchises. Sly and Bentley, Jak and Daxter and Rachet and Clank are all teamed up for this title and all with the added bonus of being developed as s Move specific game.
Rather than the platform game you may have expected, Move Heroes is a made up of a series of mini games designed to show off the Move controller’s technical ability. Apart from the recognisable characters this title has little in common with the previous franchises and ends up being like all disks full of mini games, by being not much more than a tech demo. It is fun for a while but you won’t be playing this for weeks and weeks.
Without wanting to sound too negative about the game it does have lots of redeeming factors. The graphics are quite nice and the animation of the characters is brilliant. The settings are instantly recognisable from their own iconic worlds and the music is really enjoyable, and as always the scripting does throw up tons of laughs.
As it is a game designed for the Move controller you would expect it to work perfectly and as always the Move controller does its job brilliantly, but by now we have come to expect that. I’m a huge fan of the Move controller and I think it can add a lot to certain games when implemented correctly. So while these mini games are a nice demo, they don’t really show anything that hasn’t been done before.
The different game types include variations of bowling, shooting, throwing disks or wielding axes. Controlling a flying disk in the air by twisting and turning your hand is a nice touch and while it is lots of fun in the beginning I worry about this games longevity. The axe wilding is a less precise and can prove quite difficult to control your attacks while trying to lock on to enemies.
It is all loosely tied together with a story that is a bit strange to say the least. Which involves an evil force that has stolen parts of each of the hero’s home worlds. The heroes are then brought together to form a super squad armed with a new arsenal of weapons to restore order and little else.
Overall : Playstation Move Heroes doesn’t set the world alight. Similar to many of the launch titles it is fun for a while, but the novelty soon wears off. The lack of a compelling story makes it hard to keep coming back to. It is the type of game that would have been brilliant in a launch bundle but right now there are much better games out there to show off the Move. Kids I think will get a lot more out of the game than the adults.
